Tao Yuanming was the first poet in the history of Chinese literature to write a large number of drinking poems. Lyrics

Tao Yuanming's poems on nostalgia are represented by twelve "Miscellaneous Poems" and thirteen "Reading the Classic of Mountains and Seas". The twelve poems in "Miscellaneous Poems" depict the political frustration of having aspirations but not being able to overcome them after retiring, and express one's noble personality of not coexisting with the secular world. It can be seen that the poet's inner emotions are infinitely deep and broad. The Thirteen Poems of "Reading the Classic of Mountains and Seas" express the same content by reciting the strange things in the Classic, such as the Tenth Poem, which praises Jingwei and Xingtian's "unwavering determination" to express and demonstrate one's unwavering ambition to help the world.

Tao Yuanming has the highest number and achievement of pastoral poetry. This type of poetry fully embodies the poet's noble and upright character of staying true to their aspirations; It fully demonstrates the poet's love for simple rural life, understanding of labor, and friendly feelings towards the working people; It fully expresses the poet's pursuit and longing for the ideal world. As a literati and scholar, such thoughts, emotions, and content are unprecedented in literary history, especially in societies with strict aristocratic systems and concepts. There are also some pastoral poems by Tao Yuanming that reflect his later years of hardship, which can indirectly help readers understand the tragic life of the peasant class at that time. Tao Yuanming is the pioneer of pastoral poetry. His pastoral poems, with simple and natural language and lofty artistic conception, opened up a Xintiandi for Chinese poetry, and directly affected the pastoral poetry school of the Tang Dynasty. In his pastoral poetry, his weariness of polluted reality and love for peaceful pastoral life can be seen everywhere. Due to his practical labor experience, his poetry is filled with the joy of laborers, expressing thoughts and emotions that only laborers can feel. For example, the third poem in "Returning to the Garden and Living in the Field" is a powerful proof, which is also the progress of his pastoral poetry.

Tao Yuanming's pastoral reclusive poetry had a great influence on Tang and Song poets. Du Fu's poem goes: "A contented heart should be like wine, and no one should be more pleased than poetry. This meaning is hidden in Tao's interpretation, and I will live in your future.". The Song Dynasty poet Su Dongpo had a high evaluation of Tao Qian: "At the beginning, Yuan and Ming poetry seemed to be scattered and slow, but upon closer inspection, there were peculiar lines... Only with great accuracy and profound meaning can the profound meaning be conveyed, and the language used is so refined that it can be so. It is like a great craftsman carrying a heavy weight, without any trace of an axe or chisel.".
